Folate / Folic Acid

Folate (or folic acid) is a group B vitamin that can reduce the chance of having a baby with a neural tube defect by up to 70 per cent. All women of child-bearing age need to have an adequate amount of folate in their diet, prior to becoming pregnant and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Folic acid tablet supplements can ensure women are obtaining enough folate. Women who have a family history of neural tube defects in their blood relatives, or those of their partner, need 10 times more folate than other women.
