FINE (Folate Information NEtwork) provides information for people who have some personal or family history of spina bifida or other neural tube defects.
The FINE newsletter is sent out usually in June and December to those on the register.
Folate (or folic acid) is a group B vitamin that can reduce the chance of having a baby with a neural tube defect by up to 70 per cent. All women of child-bearing age need to have adequate folate in their diet, prior to becoming pregnant and during the first four to six weeks of pregnancy - folate tablet supplements can ensure women are obtaining enough folate. Women who have a family history of neural tube defects in their blood relatives, or those of their partner, need 10 times more folate than other women.
